Generational Engagement with Event Tech

Technology in the event space has been extensively used over the last couple years; many conferences and trade shows have invested a good amount of time and money on the technological aspect of their events but there is one big missing piece…ENGAGEMENT! It’s important to consider spending as much time to engage attendees with the new tools that you are providing them—and at the end of the day—the technology used will be most efficient if your attendees are using it.
We have seen a great example of this in the digital conference we were at this June, VidCon, a conference for people who love online video. It is the largest of its kind in the world gathering thousands of independent creators, enablers, viewers and supporters of all types. Their biggest sponsor is YouTube, and this year they had more than 20K attendees all registered and checked in by yours truly.

Due to the heavy attendance at the conference, they experienced hour-long lines in the past, but his year they decided to streamline the check-in experience and consulted Boomset. We simply offered them our fast pass functionality with QR codes. The entertainers hired for 3-4 hours to amuse VidCon goers only had 45 minutes to work their magic: every attendee was registered and checked into the event in under an hour.

Here’s where the generation factor comes into play:
The lower area was catered to general admission (around 17K people), whereas the upper level was for the VIP crowd (around 3K guests). We expected more lines downstairs, but it turned out to go quicker than the VIP section. Why?

The VIPs didn’t print their fast passes, but the younger crowd did.
The founder of VidCon also utilized the event sponsor by creating a Youtube video suggesting certain time frames that the younger attendees needed to bring their fast passes…and they followed his advice.
Why is this important?
Well, not only having the technology is enough these days—you also need to market it and work it into your event so your attendees keep actively engaging with it.
What’s that about Millennials again?
